They won’t and they wouldn’t dare. To say anything else is just posturing. Why? Simple answer found here. The German army is such a joke that it couldn’t even effectively dislodge the Novorossiyan Armed Forces, and they are twenty years behind the times. Let’s talk about European militaries.
They have, in abundance, the following:
Expensive, largely untested equipment.
Low morale.
Few experienced soldiers.
Few experienced generals.
An unhealthy reliance on American military might.
And a low tolerance for losses.
This is not continent of Europe’s past. Their soldiers are no longer better than the average Russian, Asian, or South American soldiers. Most are probably worse due to a complete lack of experience against any conventional force.
And the Europeans want to talk about a common army to show Russia they mean business? Putting aside that whole project is just a way to expand German influence while diminishing American-NATO influence, a combined European army (which already exists) would barely be able to fight. The one military that can fight, the Greek military, is being constantly shunned and insulted by the rest of Europe. And don’t get me started on the French and the British, both of which have become opulent and fat.
Portugal is one of the few remaining countries with talented, experienced soldiers (and countless amputees) courtesy of the colonial wars, but the country is riddled with corruption and all the soldiers are too old to fight now, the Carnation revolution being forty years old.
And people want to talk about a European war machine? What a joke. It will take billions of dollars, multiple crises, and an immense shift in public asabiyah for Europe to be even remotely ready for any kind of war.
Contrast that with the Russians, who have spent the last decade sharpening their military. Or the Turks whose military retains enormous influence and corresponding funding for their never ending battle against the PKK. Or the Iranians who fight today, with subtelty, in Iraq. Or the Thai and Chinese, who seem to specialize in routing their own populations. Hell, at least they do something. Europe has nothing to show for its military.
